Part 3 : Five "feature" questions

Which website do you visit most often and why?
Danny Sullivan's Search Engine Watch. I'm fascinated by the whole search engine/directory industry and where it is going. xrefer provides the perfect complement to the engines: they serve up web sites and we serve up facts. Danny is the expert in the search engine space.

What did you last buy online and why did you choose that site?
I go to Sainsbury's online every week to buy my weekly groceries. I chose Sainsbury's because I used to shop at the bricks and mortar equivalent. I still think that online supermarkets have a little way to go before they are a really satisfying experience, but it still beats spending an hour or so in a grocery shop at the weekend.

What would you miss most about the Internet?
I would miss the access to such a broad range of free information and ability to communicate directly with people you would otherwise, never get to talk to. A colleague sent an e-mail to Tim Berners-Lee the other day and he replied within a few hours!

What was the best piece of web advice you ever got?
From the CEO of Macmillan, Richard Charkin: "if you don't do it someone else will..." He also taught me the real value of PR as a marketing activity to create product awareness.

Which web personality would you most like to have dinner with and why?
One funny, one serious:

  • Funny - Mahir Cagri of 'this is my home page, I kiss you fame'. I'd love to hear the full story of how his innocent web site turned him into a web celebrity overnight!
  • Serious - Easyjet founder Stelios Haji-Iannou. I love his attitude to business and marketing. He's brave enough to compete with the big shots in his various businesses and he's been smart enough to use the net as a key marketing tool.

About this week's
interviewee:

Daryl Rayner is Director of Marketing at xrefer, a new and innovative reference engine which lets the user search across a range of cross-linked reference titles from leading offline publishers. Just 2 months old, London-based xrefer is already slated for big things, with Yahoo! Internet Life saying, "If it's reference information you want, where you'll find it is xrefer.com". Daryl gives us a behind-the-scenes look at a dot-com startup...
