Interview: Neil West (Part 3/3)
by Nettie Hartsock, December 2000

Part 3 : On Advertising and Being True to your Music

What works best as far as advertising on the site and where have your primary users and reviewers and band hopefuls come from?
We've employed very specific marketing campaigns, but the majority of bands and music lovers still find garageband.com via word of mouth - we get recommended a lot by musicians.

Do you feel as though a website's content is much more important than its "eye-candy"?
Of course! It's a cliche to say it (so my apologies in advance) but it really is all about the music.

Where do you think garageband.com will be five years from now?
Still discovering the very best new musical talent, and with a roster of world-class acts (our previous contest winners!) on our own "garageband" label.

And if you had one piece of advice culled from your advisory panel's wisdom to give to a musician trying to make it out there - what would it be?
Be true to your music. And never give up.

About this week's
interviewee:

Neil West is Editor & Publisher of garageband.com. In a previous life he was editor-in-chief of Imagine Media's "Next Generation" magazine where Time Magazine praised his work for featuring "reporting worthy of Bob Woodward". In 1996 Marketing Computers magazine ranked him the US's most influential interactive entertainment journalist. And he used to be a singer in a band. In this interview we talk with Neil about the beginnings of garageband.com, the rewards to its members, and successfully meeting the online need for music lovers and band hopefuls everywhere.
