Part 3 : Web advice, favorite sites and the Next Big Thing
So, what's the best Web-related advice you ever got?
Ask yourself 100k times: why am I doing this site? What do I hope to accomplish? Don't do anything unless the answer is really exciting or at least really interesting.
Tell us a few of your favorite sites...
Well, I really like Lycos/Hotbot as a search engine, and it's hard not to like Ask Jeeves. I like the Jive Translator just because it's stupid. I like Canada.com, Canoe, Sympatico and Globeandmail.ca because they're full of info.
I like mybc.ca because they're starting to get the importance of local news on the web. I like ESPN.com because I like sports and it's assiduously up to date. I like sites that are full of information. Some day I'll like Britannia.com if I can ever figure out how to use it. The Disney site has fantastic presentation. I could go on for days and days. I love PuertoVallarta.com. I love the fact that I can reserve books at the library over the web. I love the Web!
Anything you'd like to tell our readers: your theories about the future of the Internet, The Next Big Thing, anything you feel I've left out?
I think the big point is that we won't be bound to our desks, that we'll be able to access the web via any number of devices and interfaces at convenient points, from cars to stores and living rooms, and while sitting on the beach. This access will be motivated. We won't be surfing just for fun on the beach - but we can get the weather, the score, email, whatever - even buy sun block and have somebody deliver it. We'll be totally interactive. And all those fears about us being tied to our desktops will have proven groundless. I see an even greater relationship between person and machine - a true cybernetic relationship with machines of infinite grace. Be not afraid.
