On Embracing Change...

Right now, the Web has gone from being the cute, little baby that everyone thought was perfect into this wild-eyed toddler that doesn't always do what we tell it. But this will obviously change. The Web will mature. I maintain that the Web is the most powerful communication and transactional medium that the world has ever seen. - Matt Ragas

The Internet can help the small business survive if he is prepared to break the mould and throw out every preconceived concept about how retailing should work. We are not just dealing with new systems of business, but retailing with a whole new conceptual understanding of what can be achieved. - Richard Counsell, Somerset Organics

Change can create an increased demand on employees. Traditional companies also see growth but not at the exponential factor that IT and Internet companies face. Internet start-ups also face financial challenges and will make the necessary changes. - Paul Stefunek, Stratford Group.

On the Importance of Ezines...

I do wish I had started an e-mail newsletter earlier than I did, however. That is a valuable way to build community, loyalty and return visitors, and I should have seen that much earlier. - Barbara Petura, WorkingDogWeb

The newsletter plays a vital role. It helps people get to know me, helps build friendships and it regularly reminds people that we exist - Allan Gardyne, AssociatePrograms.com

Newsletters are the best, most successful means of site promotion there is! Bottom line: Newsletters are worth doing, but allocate lots, and lots, and lots of time! - Leslie Eiser, E.D.Foods

If you give people useful and timely information that they need, they will reward you for that. It's a win-win deal. - Mark Brownlow, Science.komm

On Flexibility...

What this really boils down to is playing to your strengths rather than your weaknesses. One of the most important strengths in this new economy is flexibility and the ability to make rapid and profound decisions. - Richard Counsell, Somerset Organics

The main advantage is that we can make changes rapidly. We're free to act quickly to make changes as needed. - Debbie Campbell, Silver Fantasy

If there's one quality you need when working for an Internet company, it's flexibility (and the capacity to survive without sleep, water, food and, often, salary.) - Mark Brownlow, Science.komm

On Keeping it Simple...

Keep it simple. The most common reason why mistakes are made is unnecessary complications once the order has been received. In my case, the orders come in and the man that takes the order from the computer is responsible for that order until it is prepared, packed and dispatched. He can do nothing else until it has been processed. - Richard Counsell, Somerset Organics

Ask yourself 100k times: why am I doing this site? What do I hope to accomplish? Don't do anything unless the answer is really exciting or at least really interesting. - Paul Sullivan, Sullivan Media

On Giving it a Shot...

I guess my motto is to give it a shot - you can eat macaroni & cheese for 2 years then if it's not working out go back to the corporate world and a steady paycheck. You are the only one that can make your dreams happen and you are the only one you have to answer to if you don't pursue them. - Ashlie Lefko, City Sampler

On Being Thrifty...

So our philosophy is to start small, test the waters inexpensively, and treat it as a customer relationship measure. - Alex Swoboda, Jazz Pub Wiesen

Living within your means is the best philosophy for online businesses, because get-rich-quick schemes will always be a fantasy, not reality. - Mike Banks Valentine, Website 101
